The question "What is my purpose?" has been asked by people for centuries. But how do we answer this question? And why should we care?

This article will help you find out what your purpose in life really is

What is your purpose in life? Do you feel that you're living your life on autopilot? Or maybe you've been searching for something meaningful to add to your life. In this article, we'll explore how to find your purpose, and why it matters so much.

There's no one right answer to the question "what is my purpose in life?". It depends on who you ask, where you live, and what you believe. However, there are some things we can agree on. We all need to eat food, drink water, breathe air, sleep, and reproduce. These are our biological needs. Beyond these basics, we also need to feel safe, love, and be loved. These are our psychological needs.

Finding your purpose in life may feel like an impossible task, but with some objective support and guidance, you can reflect on what you have learned in your life so far, dig really deep to find where your passions lie, and more importantly, really understand what it is you want from life.

Find out how to discover your true purpose in life and how to live it in your relationships

What do you think your purpose in life is? Is it something you've been searching for? If not, why not? How does your current situation affect your ability to find your purpose?

Having a successful career, a partner and family, and a strong social network may seem like the perfect life. However, myself and many of my clients who tick all these boxes, still felt like something was missing… and that something is having a purpose in life. So, what does it really mean to ‘find your purpose in life”? Well, it’s more than just a dream or a goal. It’s something that will motivate you and help you make decisions that feel right - feel good - and will help you to live a better, happier, healthier and more fulfilled life.

The New York Times highlighted in an article on the same subject that “Only about a quarter of Americans strongly endorse having a clear sense of purpose and of what makes their lives meaningful, while nearly 40 percent either feel neutral or say they don’t. This is both a social and a public health problem: Research increasingly suggests that purpose is important for a meaningful life — but also for a healthy life.”

To find your purpose in life, ask yourself what you really want

In order to find your purpose in life and ultimately live it out in your relationship, you need to understand what makes you tick first. If you're not sure what you want out of life, ask yourself these questions:

1. Why do I wake up every day?

Really think about what it is that gets you out of bed in the morning. Now, you may start off with answers like: “Because I have to go to work” or “I need to for my children”. And that’s ok, but dig a little deeper… What do you enjoy about work? What do your children mean to you? You want to find what lights your fire and motivates you.

2. What makes me happy?

Building on your answers from the questions above, what really makes you happy? I bet as you’re thinking of this, you’re sitting there with a big smile on your face! These are the things that you want to hold on to and build on when you’re working on your purpose in life.

3. What do I enjoy doing?

We all have things that we love to do, but don’t feel very confident about sharing with the world. To this I would say - just because it’s easy for you doesn’t mean it’s easy for others. Thank goodness we are all different because the world would be a very boring place if we all liked and did the same things! So, the very thing that you enjoy doing, may be the one thing that someone else needs help with.

How do you live your purpose in life in your relationships?

To really help you get clear on this, start with the question: How do I want my life to make my partner or spouse feel? Finding your purpose in life is all about you, but you do not exist in isolation, so you need to understand how your purpose in life will affect those around you. Your partner or spouse is probably the person closest to you.

    1. Start by writing down your values

You need to really understand what is important to you. Thinking about your life in its entirety, just free write all the things that are important to you. It could be things like honesty, trust, family, fun… whatever it is, there is no right or wrong answer here. Then go through them one by one ranking them in order of importance. Your top six or seven will be your core values. Spend some time reflecting on what these mean to you, how you currently live them in your life and how you would like to express them in your life.

You’ll have seen me speaking many times before about having shared values with your partner or spouse. These are the fundamental, non-negotiable parts of what is important to you. If you do not have shared values, or your values are so different, it can be really difficult to connect with your partner, but more importantly live your purpose in your relationship.

    2. Think about how you want to feel

Your feelings are so important. Read that again. What you feel has a direct impact on what happens in your life. Think about it, when you’re feeling down or sad, you probably think of other things that make you sad and before you know it you are in a depressed state. When you’re happy, you are smiling and the world just seems to be smiling with you.

What do you want to feel when you're done with your day? Do you want to feel happy, fulfilled, energized, inspired, relaxed, calm, peaceful, satisfied or confident? Spend some time really thinking about what you currently do in your life that helps you to feel this way. Is there anything that is stopping you from feeling this way? Something in your thoughts or something that someone else says or does? Either way you have control over your feelings. You can change how you feel by changing how you think. And, if it’s something someone does or says, you control how you respond to that too!

    3. How do you want your partner or spouse to feel

Whilst the same goes for your partner or spouse in terms of them being in control of how they feel, you are in a partnership and everything that you do should be out of love for them. What I mean by that is that living your purpose in life should not negatively impact those around you, especially your partner or spouse. Whatever you do, consider the impact and always treat them with love and respect. Think about your values and how that plays out in your relationship.
